Angler in Focus – Arjun Mark

By profession I’m a fashion photographer. Otherwise, a keen angler and an outdoors enthusiast. Top water action is where I find my excitement, however I love jigging as well. Stickbaits, more than anything else. I regularly fish off the East coast of India in Chennai and visit the Andamans whenever I can. GTs and Yellowfins are probably my target species most times, but I must admit the Dogtooths have given me some thrilling experiences in the Andamans.

How long have you been fishing? When did you start?
I’ve been fishing since childhood and been at it relentlessly since then. I first started fishing in small ponds, slowly upgraded to lakes and rivers, eventually to find my passion for saltwater fishing inshore and offshore.

What do you like the best about fishing in the Andaman Islands?
The Andamans, offers a wide range of species and this is truly an angler’s paradise. It’s not just about the great fishing there but the scenic blue waters, shallow reefs, the vast marine life and wildlife that you get to experience during the trip.

What are Your tackle recommendations for large fish in general?
My go to popping setup will be a PE8 fast action popping rod with a Shimano Stella 14000 loaded with 90lb Varivas GT SMP. For Stickbaits, I use a PE6 medium action rod. My jigging setup is a PE4 jigging rod with a Shimano Twin Power.

What is your all-time favourite lure for GT fishing?
I don’t have a specific lure that’s a favourite choice. I like to experiment with various brands and types of lures. However, I love the Shimano Coltsniper splash walk and Shimano Orca, if I had to pick two of my favourites.

What is the most interesting experience you had on a fishing trip?
Fishing trips, especially offshore trips are a lot of fun. Almost all offshore trips have stories to tell to talk about for years. The most interesting of the lot would be an experience staying at a liveaboard and fishing throughout the day and night, anchored in the middle of the ocean next to an active volcano. This was probably a once in the life time experience.

What would be your message for the young generation of anglers?
Educate yourself on conservation. Practice responsible fishing.

What you enjoyed during your fishing trip and why you are returning with us in the Andaman Islands, would you revisit and how do you rate our service?
My trips with GFA have been productive over the years. The skippers are trained, skilled and communicate well with the guests. I’m always happy to be going out with these guys. Great fishing, professional service, Friendly staff, comfortable stay and awesome food!

Fishing destinations on your must visit list / bucket list?
For now, Andamans is a great destination for me, as every visit offers me a new experience. Andaman Islands offer me with everything that I miss out on while fishing in other coastal areas of India.

What was the biggest fish you caught till date?
My largest would be a 45kg Yellowfin on a popper, a 30kg+ GT on popper, a 20kg+ barracuda and a 80kg+ Marbled stingray on a Jig. However, most times I’ve had more fun with smaller fish than bigger fish.
