Angler in Focus – Chris Adams

I do all kinds of angling; freshwater angling in the UK, Sea angling in the UK and Norway, Saltwater fly fishing in the UK so far and have recently caught Blue sharks on the fly. I have fished in Mexico for Roosterfish, Jacks, Sailfish and whatever else it had to offer. I have done big game fishing for Marlin in Mauritius. More recently, I fished in the Andamans for GTs and had an absolutely amazing time.

How long have you been fishing? When did you start?

I have been fishing for 47 years started fishing and started when I was 4 years old, with sea fishing in the United kingdom.

What do you like the best about fishing in the Andaman Islands?

The variety of fish available is off the scale. On my last trip I had 32 different species of fish including some fantastic GTs. The reason you go to the Andamans is for the GT and I wasn’t disappointed at all. I had GT every day and on one day, managed 8 fish.

What are your tackle recommendations for large fish in general?

Never skimp on your tackle choice. Cheap rods and reels are never up to the task of catching big fish.

I use an 8’6” popping rod, built by myself on an American Tackle Bushido blank. I use a Daiwa Dogfight spinning reel for popping. Hollow core braid, good quality leader and Flourocarbon for trases. Penn International or Shimano Tiagra for big game rods and a good quality stand-up for trolling. When it comes to terminal tackle again don’t buy cheap. Buy swivels, clips and hooks from a reputable dealer and they won’t let you down.

What is your all-time favourite lure for GT fishing?

I have a lure maker in the UK called Jim Lanfear (Jim’s Lures). He made me a popper which is around 8” long and is a green mackerel pattern. The GT couldn’t resist it!

What is the most interesting experience you had on a fishing trip?

I have recently built myself a 12ft fly rod, along with some shark tube flies. On my 1st outing, I managed to get 2 sharks with this set-up – a 15lb and a 45lb. Great sport!

What would be your message for the young generation of anglers?

Don’t stick to one method of fishing. Give every style and method of fishing a go. Join a club and ask questions. Decent anglers will always help with advice and tips.

What you enjoyed during your fishing trip and why you are returning with us in the Andaman Islands, would you revisit and how do you rate our service?

Fishing with GFA was one of the most memorable trips of my life. You just can’t believe the sheer depth of species the Andamans has to offer. From being collected at the airport on arrival, the accommodation, the food and more so the fishing, GFA leaves no stone unturned, to make your experience unforgettable. I caught enormous GT in some of the most breath-taking scenery on the planet. Darran and his team really cared that the trip went well and always welcome the smallest of feedback, to improve their service.

Which is your must visit list / bucket list for fishing?

I want to fish in Australia and New Zealand.

What was the biggest fish you caught till date?

My biggest fish to date, is a 300lb black Marlin from Mauritius.
